    Get PDF
Three experiments were conducted to compare hands-free and hands-on input methods for accessible computing. The first experiment compared hands-free and hands-on text-entry on a smart-phone. EVA Facial Mouse, an Android application, was used for facial tracking for the hands-free phase of the experiment. The second experiment used the Fitts law two-dimensional task in ISO 9241-9 to evaluate hands-free and hands-on point-select tasks on a laptop computer. We used a facial-tracking software called Camera Mouse in combination with dwell-time selection. The third user study compared Camera Mouse with the keyboard and touchpad of a laptop to play a simple yet well known game: Snake. A case study was also conducted with a physically challenged participant for the hands-free phase of the gaming experiment. Our key finding from the three experiments and the case study is that the hands-free methods are not yet as well-performing as the hands-on methods

DC fault identification in multiterminal HVDC systems based on reactor voltage gradient

    Get PDF
With the increasing number of renewable generations, the prospects of long-distance bulk power transmission impels the expansion of point-to-point High Voltage Direct Current (HVDC) grid to an emerging Multi-terminal high-voltage Direct Current (MTDC) grid. The DC grid protection with faster selectivity enhances the operational continuity of the MTDC grid. Based on the reactor voltage gradient (RVG), this paper proposes a fast and reliable fault identification technique with precise discrimination of internal and external DC faults. Considering the voltage developed across the modular multilevel converter (MMC) reactor and DC terminal reactor, the RVG is formulated to characterise an internal and external DC fault. With a window of four RVG samples, the fault is detected and discriminated by the proposed main protection scheme amidst a period of five sampling intervals. Depending on the reactor current increment, a backup protection scheme is also proposed to enhance the protection reliability. The performance of the proposed scheme is validated in a four-terminal MTDC grid. The results under meaningful fault events show that the proposed scheme is capable to identify the DC fault within millisecond. Moreover, the evaluation of the protection sensitivity and robustness reveals that the proposed scheme is highly selective for a wide range of fault resistances and locations, higher sampling frequencies, and irrelevant transient events. Furthermore, the comparison results exhibit that the proposed RVG method improves the discrimination performance of the protection scheme and thereby, proves to be a better choice for future DC fault identification

The research focuses on the assessment of SMEs (Small and Medium Size Enterprises) & its impacts on socio-economic spheres; it focuses on the effective ways for growth & development of SMEs in Bangladesh for socioeconomic development. Bangladesh is one of the poorest countries in the world with low GDP/capita and minimum purchasing power. 24.8% of the total population of the country does live below the national poverty line ($2/day), while 6.5% of them do live in extreme poverty [4]. To bring the vast population out of the vicious circle of poverty and accelerate the economic growth are the target and attention of the country. To pave the way for first & foremost task is either to create direct employment or create condition to create employment to reduce the unemployment rate & accelerate the source and level of disposable income. Growth & development of SMEs, which create self-employments and employments for low and semi-skilled workers, are the target and attention of the country. But the ways for growth & development of SMEs in Bangladesh are not smooth enough. They are frequently confronted with structural, managerial, financial, and social challenges. For sustainable development large population groups are needed to get the ways for their own development. The research was conducted by structural and semi-structural questionnaires and face-to-face interview of 150 recipients of social classes and ages in rural and urban areas in Bangladesh. The aim of the paper is to analyze the effect of Co-operative Investment Policy through “Co-operative Society Micro-saving Bank” and ‘’Innovative SME Model’’ for growth and development of SMEs and MIAs (Micro Industrial Activities) and its impacts on socio-economic development. The target is to aggregate impoverished individuals’ micro saving, limited capability, little working skills & experiences to create them depositors, investors, successful entrepreneurs & skills workers through establishing co-operative society micro-saving bank and involving them in entrepreneurial activities

E-Learning could be defined as instructional content or learning experiences delivered or enabled by the current advanced computer and other technologies. In many cases, especially in the developed countries, adoptions of E-Learning alongside the traditional classroom learning have shown promise for effective human learning. Being a developing country, adoption of E-Learning in Bangladesh stumbles, where many other factors come into play side by side the technological limitations. The intent of this paper is to identify the prospects and challenges for launching E-Learning in larger scale in Bangladesh. We also discuss how human learning process could be influenced by E-learning strategies and why E-Learning could be helpful for a country like Bangladesh

Lighting is one of the dominant electricity demand factors in the building energy sector and has huge potential for demand reduction. However, concerning the efficacy of energy consumption, this potential energy-saving option entails further investigations, particularly for developing countries. This study addresses the issues of an efficient lighting system design for educational institutions with particular attention to classroom and laboratory lighting systems for a university in Bangladesh as a case study. Measurements show that during the daytime, under clear and average sky conditions both rooms received sufficient natural light (>300 lx) for educational activities, whereas under an overcast sky, only 50% space receives sufficient natural light. At night, the installed fluorescent tube lights illuminance level was found insufficient (<300 lx) for educational activities. The inefficient lighting system design was found to be the main reason for this illuminance level. Simulation results reveal that light emitting diode (LED) tube lights with a maintenance factor of 0.8 could save 10,080-15,120 kWh, 91,929-137,894 BDT (1USD=84BDT), and 6,753-10,130 kgCO2-eq, energy, cost, and, greenhouse gas emissions respectively per year for the classrooms

Differential Evolution Approach to Detect Recent Admixture

The genetic structure of human populations is extraordinarily complex and of fundamental importance to studies of anthropology, evolution, and medicine. As increasingly many individuals are of mixed origin, there is an unmet need for tools that can infer multiple origins. Misclassification of such individuals can lead to incorrect and costly misinterpretations of genomic data, primarily in disease studies and drug trials. We present an advanced tool to infer ancestry that can identify the biogeographic origins of highly mixed individuals. reAdmix is an online tool available at http://chcb.saban-chla.usc.edu/reAdmix/.Comment: presented at ISMB 2014, VariSI

Consumer rights are considered as the basic human right and violation of consumer rights is considered as the violation of the human rights. The ignorance of the consumers regarding their rights is a contributing factor to poor consumer rights protection in our country. This study aims at measuring the awareness and status of Bangladesh on consumer rights protection. Primary data has been collected from 450 representative samples besides analyzing available secondary data. It has been revealed through our study that 53.3 percent of the population is totally ignorant about their rights as consumer and the remaining 46.7 percent are knowledgeable about rights to a limited extent. 52 percent of the consumers of our country think that they are constantly being deceived by the egoistic businessmen. These consumers can’t do anything other than remaining silent. Our study has suggested a set of action plan classified into four categories i.e.: awareness building program, infrastructure development, legislative based action plan and law enforcing team development, to ensure the protection of consumer rights in Bangladesh. Keywords: Consumer Bill of Rights, Consumer Activist Group, Consumer Awareness, Anti-consumer Rights Practice

This internship report is submitted in a partial fulfillment of the requirements for the degree of Bachelor of Business Administration, 2015.Cataloged from PDF version of Internship report.Includes bibliographical references (page 31).A.R. Printing & Packaging Industry is a versatile manufacturer in quality paper products of Bangladesh. It plays a vital role to contribute to the demand of several largest companies in Bangladesh such as, ACI Pharmaceuticals Ltd., Square Bangladesh Ltd., Aromatic Cosmetics Ltd., Bata Shoes Ltd., and so on. It is a great chance for me to do my internship in A.R. Printing & Packaging Industry. This is a large factory with all the facilities of printing and packaging. A.R. Printing & Packaging Industry is capable of supplying all kinds of printing and packaging products of distinguished design and outstanding quality as per buyer requirements. So, it is a matter of concern that why this industry is well renounced in this packaging world. In the whole procedure of delivering goods to the retailer, maintain relationship and to communicate with them, have a great influence and responsibilities. When, the order is taken from buyer the duty comes to the floor of managers and before going production they do almost everything to make the business smoothly. So, the work starts with the order taking and making business relationship. Then sample making, planning, booking of every single material for samples and getting approval are all the key responsibilities of marketing managers. In production, sample goes in bulk so, the responsibilities become huge and it comes to the relation with operation also. I was selected for the buyer Jamuna welding ltd. And I find it very challenging to fulfill their requirements and deliver the goods on time and also receiving the payments. It was a great joy to work in this place and I really enjoyed it.Md.
